Didn’t happen

We did not make it out to Howl-O-Sream this weekend but our daughter did.  She was there for 3 hours and made it through 1 haunted house.  She gets scared easy and she said this year it was not scary at all.  Although the guy on stilts did get her scream as she was leaving.  Like I said pay the extra bucks and do the VIP tour.

Planet Aid blog

This fabulous site, PlanetAid, connects you to all corners of the world. Not only do they make important strides in different countries they also have programs in the United States. They have teamed up with schools in Baltimore-Washington and Kansas City to help them with a recycling program and a clothing drive. There are a few different ways you can help Plant Aid. You could donate your used laptop to be given to students at The Teacher Training colleges in Angola, Mozambique and Malawi.

You can also donate your time by volunteering in the USA or in Africa. There is also a blog maintained by Plant Aid. There you can find post written by managers, videos of the programs they sponsor, such as clothing donation and they have even hosted a Hobby Stock Care Race in New Hampshire.

Thank goodness it is the weekend

Hoping to go to Hallo Scream this weekend at Busch Gardens.  It is so much fun but our oldest daughter usually ends up crying.  She is terrified of clowns and guess what they have them every year.

Last year we did the VIP tour and let me tell you it is so worth the money.  We made it through all of the haunted houses and rode a couple of coasters and was finished in a couple of hours.  Usually we do not get to do everything and we stay until it closes.  The lines are just so long waiting to get into the haunted houses.

New species found in Vietnam

I have to admit when I started to read this article and I saw there were pictures of each of the plants and the snake that the scientists discovered I was really excited. For whatever reason I was thinking that these were going to be the most beautiful plants I had ever seen. I don’t know why my mind was thinking that way. I guess because they were new and in the moutains of Vietnam, they must be beautiful right?

I am sure that to some people they are but I found myself a little dissapointed by the pictures. The image that was coming into my head when I read that they found a leafless orchid was not the image I saw. I guess the one I was most impressed with was the Saccolabiopsis viridiflora, the flowers look like little cups. I was able to find a picture of the Aspidistra nicolai, which produces the black flower. Now that is a breath taking photo. It looks like it should be dead but it is very much alive.

English in China

Since the Peace Corps are falling by the waste side my daugther is looking into going to China to teach English. Has anyone done this? We are kind of leary because of the political climate right now in China. If it were Japan we would probably feel more comfortable about it.

What are your views on it? Have you taught there are know someone that has? Give me a shout.

Spend your Black Friday shopping from home

Shopping from home on black Friday? Everyone at this point must know what Black Friday is but just to be safe. Black Friday is the day after Thanksgiving. For most people this is the first day of their Christmas shopping so stores have crazy deals so people will come out and spend their cash.

Can this be true? You mean I don’t have to get up at 4am to be in line at Wal-mart or Target by 5am and then stand with my hand on the computer or baby doll that we want until 6am? A new website , blackfriday, is putting end to all the craziness.

Yes, my friend, it is true. Welcome to that 21st century, where a hermit can really be a hermit. Now you don’t even have to leave your house to get all of those cool deals they have to lure you out on Black Friday. Black-Friday will even send you email alerts to let you know when stores post their black Friday ads so you can plan out your shopping in advance.

You would not believe the stores they have access too. They have over 50 stores they are expecting to get black Friday ads for. I am going to keep my eye on Best Buy, Toys R Us and New Egg specials for some great deals. Good luck and happy shopping.

Produce that makes you smile

I have to share this with you guys. My youngest daughter has discovered Veggie Tales. They are the funniest thing I have seen. They have the catchiest theme song: “If you like to talk to tomatoes, if a squash can make you smile, if you like to waltz with potatoes.” I have been singing that song since yesterday. Lani loves the theme song; she just dances and claps her hands.

The up side to these videos is that it teaches them a little about God. I know not everyone believes in him but we do. Not like some crazy church people or anything like that but we pray. The video we have now is God Made You Special and it is so cute. Each video acts out a story from the bible on a level that a child can relate too.

If you don’t mind your child being exposed to religion at an early age, I give kudos to Veggie Tales they are awesome. Go to Veggie Tales official website and get more information on them. They have a very good message for children.

Get hooked on PPP

I just signed up for PPP, that is Pay Per Post. It is a way for me to make money blogging. I am so excited about this opportunity. I get the chance to go to websites that I may not have seen other wise and look at them, then pass them on to you.

Yes, I can make money at this. For each post that I write a monetary value is placed on it. At the end of 30 days BAM I get a check. How simple is that? You only pick the sites you want to write about so you don’t have to go to a site that you don’t like and say that you do like it. You have the freedom to accept or refuse any website if you really don’t care for what they are about.

On the other hand if you find a cool one, write about it. Let everyone know that you found this really cool site and they might like it too. PPP gives you all of the tools you need start blogging for money. I am hoping that with the extra income, college for my daughter will not be so scary. Just getting that little extra in each month is something that I could get use too.

Volunteering? It will cost you!!!!

What happened to the days when you volunteered somewhere and you did not have to pay? As you know my daughter is graduating from high school in May and she wanted to join the Peace Corps to be an active member of our society instead of a burden. To our surprise we find out that the Peace Corps have the following minimum requirements:

• 18 years of age or older
• U.S. citizenship
• A four-year college degree or solid work experience in an area such as agriculture, business management, or a skilled trade. A community college degree paired with specific skills or work experience may also qualify you.

Yes you did read that right. One of the minimum requirements is that you have a 4 year degree or solid work experience. My question is, after going to school for 4 years and obtaining your degree, at that point in your life who can realistically pick up and leave for a year or two.

So my daughter and I start looking into other programs that you can volunteer for. There has to be other programs right? One that you do not have to have a 4 year degree to join and help make a difference in the world. We looked and looked and looked and all we found were other programs that you had to pay them to let you go volunteer for them. Wait just a minute you say. The standard program to go and volunteer for a year where ever they need you cost you, the volunteer, between $2,000 and $5,000 depending on where you are sent.

How did we become a society where when our children decided to give of themselves to a world that obviously needs children that put others before themselves, we charge them or in most cases their parents for this “privilege”? I did volunteer work when I was younger and I did not have to pay someone to let me work for them for free.

How does this make sense? There has to be some programs out there that would welcome students like mine with open arms without charging them an arm and a leg. I am putting a call out to each and every one of you. If you know of any programs that would allow a high school graduate to give up a year of her life to go and make the world a better place without charging us $2,000 to $5,000 please let me know.

It is rare in this day and age that you have a 17 year old talking about putting her life on hold for the betterment of mankind. Why do we have to make it is difficult for them to do that?

Digital cameras, a must

What would life be like without a digital camera? I think of how long it took me to develop film back in the stone age. :) Like how my daughter was 2 months old when I took the pictures but 1 ½ when I had them developed. Now thanks to cameras with docking stations I am able to send the photos out to friends and family moments after the picture is taken.

Last week I was able to video my daughter throwing a tantrum for the first time with the video feature on my camera. I posted the video and the next day it had been viewed 30 times. Canon cameras are also great gifts for children just starting out with photography. They can see the pictures right away and it speeds up the time it takes for them to learn the skills of picture taking. Instead of waiting days or weeks to see that they did not get all of grandma’s head in the picture they can see it in seconds. Also with the on screen menus it is easy for them to see the features a camera has and explore more with picture taking.

Jury Duty Scam

I had to pass this along to you guys. The article for snopes.com and the FBI are attached. Please be aware!!! Never, under any circumstances give your information out over the phone. Please see the article below and follow up by going the attached links.

JURY DUTY SCAM: This has been verified by the FBI. Please pass this on to everyone in your email address book. It is spreading fast so be prepared should you get this call. Most of us
take summons for jury duty seriously, but enough people skip out on their civic duty, that a new and ominous kind of scam has surfaced. The caller claims to be a jury coordinator. If you protest that you never received a summons for jury duty, the scammer asks you for your Social Security number and date of birth so he or she can verify the information and cancel the arrest warrant.

Give out any of this information and bingo; your identity just got stolen. The scam has been reported so far in 11 states, including Oklahoma, Ill inois, and Colorado. This (scam) is particularly insidious because they use intimidation over the phone to try to bully people into
giving information by pretending they’re with the court system. The FBI and the federal court system have issued nationwide alerts on their web sites, warning consumers about the fraud.

Jena 6

I would really like to hear your views on the Jena 6. I am trying to provide you with as much information as possible on this because I am sure you are aware that each media source you read puts a different spin on it. I know Wikipeda is not so famous for accuracy but they do provide additional information on the boys that were charged.

Here is another article that tells you that the first defendant had an all white jury, it also points out the fact that Jena is 85% white.

Believe me I am not saying that they deserve to be in jail for the rest of their lives but I do not believe they should be let off without any punishment at all. The punishment handed down by the school board was unjust especially in our day of zero tolerance. The boys should have been expelled from the school not given a 3 day suspension. However, that did not give anyone the right to take the law into their own hands and beat another person because they felt they did not get the proper punishment. What would the world come to if we were just able to go around and hand out the punishment we thought someone deserved when we felt like the justice system failed us?

How about rapist and child killers that get such light sentences? Should we just line them up after the trail and give them our own brand of punishment? That is why we have laws. I know racism is still a very true part of everyday life especially in the south and it is fueled by corrupt police departments and the “good ole boy” system. We must press on, we must change the system peacefully, and we must make the laws and the system fair and equal for everyone.

The Jena 6 is not a crime against blacks it is a crime against America. Until we start to believe that, nothing is going to change. We will continue to hold everyone to a different standard and think that there is nothing wrong with that. We can change things peacefully if we tried. Too know that in 2007 there are still schools in America you can go to that still hang nooses from trees is unbelievable. What is more unbelievable is that there are still people in authority that believe that things like that are just “pranks”.

I was raised in the south but I was not raised to believe that black people were of a lower class than whites. Not all people from the south have that set of beliefs. When incidents like this happen it reaffirms everyone’s believe that the south is still stuck in the days of slavery. It is changing, not as fast as we would like it to but as new people come into positions of power the “good ole boy” days of the south are on borrowed time.

There is a march being held today in Jena and we hope that it is a peaceful one. Rev. Jesse Jackson, Martin Luther King, III and Rev. Al Sharpton are all expected to attend. Please stay current on this issue, if not here somewhere else.

Think twice about that tatoo

I have three tatoos myself and I have never really given any serious thought to having them removed. In fact I just received my third tattoo on my back. I love them they mark a time in my life that I want to remember and putting it in ink on your body is a wonderful way to always remember that time in your life. With that said you must make sure that the time you want to remember is something that is heartfelt and you will still look back on it with fond memories even when you are 50 or 60.

According to the article it is more painful getting it removed than it is to put it on. Just remember the closer to bone the more pain you will have. Also the further away from the heart that tattoo is the harder it is to remove.

The :-) turns 25!!!!!! Horray for us

Can you image life without the :-) ? I don’t know if I could. I use it on my computer, my phone, even hand writing messages, if anyone does that anymore. Twenty-five years ago the genius of professor Scott E. Fahlman changed email communitcation forever. Imagine how many times you would have upset someone had it not been for the little :-) . It is hard to let people know you are joking through email and sometimes that is the root of people’s feelings getting hurt. But tack on :-) or even ;-) and the message is clear, “I am joking with you don’t get your panties in a wad.”
